How can providers work to make sure marginalized or underrepresented communities are informed about the importance of diagnostic tests and empowered to seek appropriate care?

Dr. Brandy Gunsolus:

So first thing providers can do is actually offer the care to begin with and not assume that if someone appears to be or is from a specific socioeconomic background or particular race, or even, live in a particular area, that they are unequipped to handle diagnostic testing or be able to obtain diagnostic testing. Additionally, there are lots of programs that are out there in order to help these individuals be able to afford the testing that they may need, especially when it comes to genetics. There are many tests that are out there that are actually free. They are sponsored tests sponsored by different companies that are free to the patients and free to the provider. This helps reduce the...this helps improve the access to diagnostic tests from these different communities and getting providers to…

…learn about these programs that are out there and provide these programs as options to their patients would be just invaluable to these individuals. As a general public, if you are interested in seeking out some of these types of tests, you can actually do an Internet search for, you know, sponsored genetic panels. And there are several companies out there that have partnered with, you know, different private industries in order to provide these sponsored tests. They are called sponsored tests, not free tests. So you do have to look specifically for sponsored tests, but there are a large number of these sponsor tests out there that are free to the public, free to the providers. You just have to know how to find them.
